On Captain James Cook's third expedition to the Pacific, they made the first recorded European visit to Hawai'i in 1778. Cook was killed and Lieutenant James King was made First Lieutenant of the Discovery. One of his tasks was completing the journals Cook had started. Lt. King devoted two full pages to a description of surfboard riding, as practiced by the locals at Kealakekua Bay on the Kona coast of the Big Island. The history is long and tied closely to the occupation of the island by Europeans and their missionaries.

Surfing is a sport in which the surfer rides a surfboard on a wave towards shore. Waves suitable for surfing are found primarily in the oceans. A surfboard is an elongated board; relatively light, but strong enough to support a person standing on them while they ride a breaking wave. Modern surfboards are crafted from polyurethane or polystyrene.

There are a couple of good surf shops here that handle retail sales, possible rentals and training. We can help you get connected with a surfing operation to get you going!
