Manzanillo Skimboarding

Skim Board Photo Collage

Skimboarding is a sport that incorporates aspects of surfing and skateboarding into one unique experience. Surfers swim their board out to catch a wave. Skimboarders stand about 20 feet / 6 meters from the sea holding their board and wait for a wave. When a wave they like is spotted they run towards the sea to meet it with their board still in hand. When they reach the wet sand they drop the board and jump onto it. The skimmer has to maintain balance, stability and speed to transition from sand to sea. They glide into the ocean and meet the oncoming wave, bank off of it and ride it back into shore. See a photo gallery of this sequence!

Skimboarding has a long history. Over 60 years ago the boards were round wooden boards and were used primarily in the wet sand and very shallow water. It has evolved into a very competitive sport testing some of the finest riders in the world.

Today skimboards are constructed from fiberglass or carbon fiber and high density foam for the core. The fiberglass or carbon fiber is a fabric which becomes stiff when saturated with resin and cured. Skimboards vaguely resemble surfboards but are shorter, thinner and slightly wider. They lack skegs or fins and are not as stable. A lot of practice is required to control them. Because they lack skegs there things that can be done on a skimboard that cannot be done on a surfboard.

There are many skimboarders in Manzanillo and several locations that support training etc. We can get you matched up with a group to help you get started with skimboarding!
