Sponge![]() Sponges have lots of little holes and a few large ones. They are filter feeders (or suspension feeders) that collect bacteria, plankton and organic particles from the water. Sponges are the simplest of multicellular animals. The individual cells form no true tissue layers or organs. The surface of a sponge is perforated with small holes. Water is drawn into the sponge through these pores and pumped through the interior by whip-like extensions on the cells called flagella. As the water passes through the sponge, food and oxygen are filtered out. The inbound small pores are called incurrent pores and water exits through one or more large excurrent openings. | |
