Urchin Anal Sac Found at depths from just under the surface to about 350 ft (107 m). They have very long, slender, serrated spines and dark purple color. They inhabit shallow reefs and hide in crevices and holes. | |

| Features: | See "Crowned Urchin" in another listing. What these photos show is the urchin with it?s anal sac extended. Sea urchins mouths are on the bottom so to extend their anal sac they spread their spines and allow it to distend. When first sighted the photographer thought something had invaded this urchin but it is normal for Crowned Urchins to proudly display their anus in the open water. |
| Size: | They grow to a diameter of 6" (15cm) with spines about twice as long as their test. |
| Cautions: | Spines are extremely sharp and can penetrate rash guards and thin neoprene. Painful and brittle they will easily break off under the skin. |
