Coral![]() Coral is a huge volume of information all by itself. The photos here are intended only to show a few samples of the types of corals frequently seen in Manzanillo waters. Corals are tiny animals that form colonies of thousands and attach to hard surfaces. A fantastic number of animals and plants have associated with coral reefs creating beautiful and very complex ecosystems. Coral phylum also includes hydroids, jellyfish and anemones. Their anatomy is a simple cup-shaped body, with a single, central opening encircled by tentacles. This opening forms both the mouth and anus. Most attach themselves to a hard surface and are known as polyps. Within the tentacles is a stinging nematocysts which are used to capture prey and in the defense of the polyp. | |
