Sams Pizzeria

by Terry Sovil

Have you tried Sams Pizzeria yet? It's worth the trip! We have sampled their food three times and enjoyed the food, the service, the music and the good conversation. Sams is located on Blvd. Miguel de la Madrid #14192 lote C in Santiago. In more common terms it's across from the cemetery and diagonally across from the brand new Kiosko/Pemex as you head out to Mira Mar beach.

You can do a virtual visit via their web site with one of the trendy new ".MX" extensions at: http://www.samspizzeria.com.mx/. Their phone number is 314-334-6688 and they are open Wednesday thru Sunday at 4:00pm.

Derek is the spouse of ERIKA TALIA ALCANTARA SMITH, the IdeaCOM Consulting group and attorney known to many. Derek has a distinguished history in the culinary arts in Canada and previously at Coco Loco. The name Sams come from their new daughter, Samantha. If the logo looks somehow familiar, recall "Cheers" where "everybody knows your name".

Sams sports a comprehensive menu of pizzas as well as tortas, salads and drinks. They have table space so you can eat there, enjoy the music and talk with Derek or take it away. They carry a selection of Mexican wines under the L.A. Cetto brand name and you can order a glass or buy a bottle to take away. Bottles are priced at $100 pesos each. I sampled a bottle of the Cabernet and found it very drinkable and enjoyable at a reasonable price. Wine includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Sirah, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and a Riesling. They also carry beer, sodas, juice and some of the energy drinks.

We sampled two of the salads, the Greek salad which is really quite well done in spite of the scarce availability of the some of the traditional ingredients. It was a delicious meal! We also tried the Spinach salad which includes candied pecans, red onion and mushrooms with a citrus vinaigrette. Both of the salads were well above average. Real salads are not always easy to come by here so a crispy salad is worth the price of admission for sure.

Their sandwich offerings include an Italiano, Chicken and Pork. We have not sampled their sandwiches yet but based on experience these should be excellent choices.

From the pizza list we tried the "Porkys" (from the movie of the same name) as a take-away. The Porkys is slow roasted pork, caramelized onion, goat cheese and apple. If it sounds like a strange combination it's not and works really well. It was an excellent pie. We ordered a "Hawaiian" to eat there and it was outstanding. Traditional ham & pineapple served at your table with little wooden plates that are shaped like a big slice of pizza. The crusts are the way I like them, a bit crispy. These are done up in a big wood-fired oven which adds to the charm. It all works well. Service was good, attentive and Derek and the staff are friendly and outgoing. Plan to visit Sams!
